22-year old Karthik Naren has become the toast of Kollywood in recent times. His maiden venture as director in the form of late last year’s successful Dhuruvangal Padhinaaru has done wonders to his fledgling career.
Success of Naren, who hadn’t worked under any director as an assistant, in his debut venture has surprised many industry folks. The crew of the film celebrated the film’s 75-day run in theatres at a recent event held in Chennai. Speaking on the occasion, Naren said “I’m from Ooty and reside in Coimbatore with my family. I came to Chennai with the dream of directing a film and knocked at many producers’ houses.
“Though many liked the script, most of them didn’t want to invest a few crores as I was only 21 when I launched the film. I told this to my father who said that he had full faith in my film-making abilities and produced the film for me. I didn’t know much about films and film-making; whatever knowledge I possess is due to the net-surfing and the ‘search engine’ of Google.
“I’m grateful to Rahman Sir for trusting me and taking up the lead role; I’m happy at the film’s success. I’m also thankful to the Almighty as giants such as Mani Ratnam, Shankar and Murugadoss besides A.R. Rahman lauded my effort and congratulated my success,” Naren said, adding that his next directorial venture Naragasuran would be produced by ace director-producer Gautham Vasudev Menon.
