Decks were cleared at the eleventh hour for actor Viay’s Mersal to hit the screens tomorrow on Deepavali.
Directed by Atlee Kumar and starring Vijay, Samantha, Kajal Aggarwal and Nithya Menen in the lead, the film has been facing issues for the past few months ever since the crew wrapped up the film’s shoot. Rajendran had earlier contested the film’s title in Court, stating that he had already registered the title of Mersalayitten with the Producers’ Council.
The Court later set aside his petition and allowed the film’s makers to use the title of Mersal. Later, the tug-of-war between theatre-owners and the Govt. of Tamil Nadu on (imposition of) entertainment tax delayed the proceedings. The final ‘straw’ was the much-awaited ‘No Objection Certificate’ (NOC) from the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) as the film’s crew had used doves and cattle during the shoot.
The AWBI met yesterday morning and after prolonged deliberation, provided the much-needed ‘NOC’ which ensured that the film would be releasing on Deepavali. The Censor Board certified the film later in the evening and the advance booking of tickets commenced around the same time.
